Married five times to: Virginia Cherrill, Barbara
Hutton, the Woolworth Dimestore Heiress, and Betsy Drake with whom he made
two movies. This lasted the longest of his five marriages. His fourth wife,
Dyan Cannon, was an actress also and they had one daughter, Jennifer Grant,
his only child. His last wife was Barbara Harris.
Irene Dunne, who made three films with Cary Grant, stated that she had worked
with many leading men, but working with Cary was different, he was much more
fun. She goes on to say, "People usually react with skepticism when I
say that Cary's intelligence and seriousness of approach were his strongest
points as an actor, but this is true. Behind that carefree and sophisticated
man on the screen, there's a painstaking worker and keen mind at work. When
I acted with him he was too busy to really enjoy his stardom. He was a modest
man who continually worked at his craft to show everyone that his popularity
wasn't due to his looks -- even when such proof was no longer neccessary."*
"I will always remember two compliments
he paid me. He said I had perfect timing in comedy and that I was the sweetest
smelling actress he ever worked with."*
