Born Archibald Leach in 1904. He was a debonair British born leading man with a personality and accent all his own. He had varied theatrical experience before settling in Hollywood.

Onscreen from 1932 until he retired from making movies in 1966. He then became a corporate executive with Brut, a cosmetics and film-producing company.

During his 34 years in the movie business, he made a total of 78 movies. Many of them are now considered Classics. He was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar twice for Penny Serenade and None But the Lonely Heart.

In 1969 he received a special Oscar "for his unique mastery of the art of screen acting with the respect and affection of his colleagues." He died in 1986.
